2025 marks the 125 years anniversary of Sigmund Freud’s Die Traumdeutung (The Interpretation of Dreams). On this occasion, The Danish Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis will host an international conference on Freud’s groundbreaking book at the University of Copenhagen, Søndre Campus.
The Interpretation of Dreams has been and still is a great source of inspiration not only for clinically working psychoanalysts, but also for analysts of society, culture, art, and literature, as well as for philosophers and cultural theorists. The conference will explore how Freud’s concepts and methods, initially centered on dreams, can inspire contemporary discussions within philosophy, health humanities, and arts & cultural studies.
How can the book’s ideas, methods and concepts be reawakened today when unfolded in (analyses of) art works, literary texts, activist movements, individual and collective dreams, ideological statements, slogans etc.? What (explicit and implicit) theories of subject and language do the book present, and how do they relate to other, historical and contemporary, theories? What novel ways of engaging with psychoanalytical vocabulary and approaches can be discerned?
We invite papers (30 minutes presentations) that take their point of departure in The Interpretation of Dreams. Close-readings and reinterpretations of certain dreams/passages are welcome, so are any kind of analysis inspired by the book, or reflections on its method, concepts, and potential.
Please, send your paper proposal (title + short abstract, max 150 words) to roesing@hum.ku.dk
Deadline: 2024 December 15th
The conference is organized in collaboration with The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, University of Copenhagen, and VIA University College, Aarhus.
